Biography

Professor Chen Shouyu, a native of Ningbo City, Zhejiang Province in China, graduated from the Civil Engineering Department of Shanghai Jiaotong University in 1952, and then taught at Dalian University of Technology. From 1955-1957, he studied (on-the-job) and graduated in the Hydrology and Water Resources Graduate Class of Hohai University. Since then, he had devoted himself to education, hydrology and water resources, and water conservancy and hydropower engineering research. Since the mid-1980s, he had served as a doctoral tutor for Water Conservancy and Hydropower Engineering and Hydrology and Water Resources. At the same time, he was also a tutor for a post-doctoral research station in Water Conservancy, instructed and trained more than 50 graduate students and post-doctoral students.

Hydrological Achievements

He was a well-known hydrology and water resource scientist and engineering fuzzy set expert in China and made important contributions in the field of education and scientific research. He had been committed to the theory and application of hydrology and water resources systems fuzzy sets and engineering fuzzy sets for a long time. He was the founder and pioneer of fuzzy hydrology and water resources in China. He proposed the concept, theory and method of "fuzzy hydrology", which gradually developed into a new branch of hydrology, and then was applied to water resources analysis. He broke through the concept of static fuzzy set proposed by L.A.Zadeh, pointed out the theoretical flaws of its fuzzy staticity, and proposed the variable fuzzy set theory. He also participated in the research of many major water conservancy issues in China.
