== History ==
Thomason College of Civil Engineering, which later became the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee), played a significant role in the construction of the Ganga Canal. The college was established in 1847, and one of its first major projects was the construction of the Ganga Canal. The Ganga Canal project was initiated in 1854 by the British colonial government in India with the goal of providing irrigation to the fertile lands of the upper Ganges plain. The project was considered a massive engineering feat at the time and required the construction of a large network of canals, dams, and embankments.

The college was responsible for providing the trained personnel for the project and the design and supervision of the construction. Many of the early graduates of the college were sent to work on the Ganga Canal project, and it served as a training ground for engineers who would later go on to work on other major infrastructure projects in India and around the world. The Ganga canal was completed in 1854 and it is still functional now and providing irrigation to the fertile land of the upper Ganges plain.

The Department of Hydrology is one of the 23 academic departments of the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee. The Department came into existence with the inception of the International Post Graduate Course in Hydrology in 1972, being the first such a program in a developing country. The courses, offered by the Department are presently sponsored by the Government of India and UNESCO. The Department has nine dedicated full-time faculty members having specializations in surface water hydrology (Floods, Droughts), water resources systems, watershed management, Geo-hydrology, groundwater geophysics, stochastic hydrology, hydro-informatics, environmental hydrology, atmospheric physics, climate change, etc. The Department of Hydrology at IIT Roorkee offers undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs in hydrology, and conducts research in a wide range of areas, including water resources management, groundwater hydrology, hydrological modeling, and remote sensing. The faculty and students of the department have made significant contributions to the field of hydrology in India and internationally.
