From the Introduction: "The major hydrologic discoveries of Perrault, Mariotte, and Halley provided a critical turning point in hydrology, transforming it from a more qualitative to quantitative discipline. Well connected to scientific societies and publishing their discoveries, these three men were among the first to conduct hydrologic experiments that resulted in empirically based discoveries, thus establishing hydrology as a quantitative physical science."
